Rights and Responsibilities

As a Spanish citizen you have the right to live and work in Spain and anywhere in the European Union, vote in elections and stand for public office, and hold a Spanish passport, which provides visa‑free or visa‑on‑arrival access to many countries.

Citizenship entails responsibilities, including obeying Spanish laws, paying taxes and, if you are male and the government reintroduces mandatory military service, registering for conscription. You are expected to respect the rights of others and participate in civic life. Unless you are exempt, you must renounce your previous nationality when you acquire Spanish citizenship.
