Rights and Responsibilities

Dutch citizens may live and work anywhere in the Netherlands and the EU, vote in all elections, apply for a Dutch passport and receive consular assistance abroad. You can sponsor family members to come to the Netherlands and benefit from Dutch social security and healthcare systems.

Citizenship also imposes obligations: obey the law, pay taxes and, if conscription ever returns, serve if called upon. You must participate in the naturalisation ceremony and show commitment to the values of the Dutch constitution. Dual citizenship is normally not permitted, so you may need to renounce your previous nationality.
