Application Process

Applications are submitted online through the Ministry of the Interiorโ€™s portal. You will need digital copies of your birth certificate (with apostille and translation), passport, residence permit, certificate of residency from your municipality, income tax returns for the last three years, criminal background checks from Italy and your home country, and your B1 Italian language certificate.

A government fee of โ‚ฌ250 is paid when submitting the application. The prefecture reviews your file and may request additional documents. The process can take 24 to 36 months. Once approved you will be invited to a ceremony at your municipality where you swear allegiance to the Republic and receive your certificate. Children under 18 living with the applicant become citizens automatically.
