Rights and Responsibilities

U.S. citizens may vote in federal, state and local elections, run for elective office and apply for a U.S. passport. You can sponsor certain relatives for immigration and are generally eligible for federal jobs and benefits.

Citizens have obligations too. You must obey all federal, state and local laws, pay taxes and serve on a jury when summoned. Male citizens aged 18–25 must register with the Selective Service System. Participating in your community and respecting the rights of others are important civic responsibilities.
