Rights and Responsibilities

French citizens can vote in all elections, stand for public office, work without restriction in France and the European Union and hold a French passport. You can also live and work freely in other EU countries and receive consular assistance abroad.

Citizens are expected to respect the values of the French Republic, obey the law, pay taxes and fulfil civic duties such as jury service. Voting is not compulsory but is considered a civic responsibility. You should also continue to integrate and contribute to the nation’s cultural and social life.
